RELIGIOUS LIBERTIES RESTORATION ACT
September 5, 2003

Former Congressman Bill Dannemyer is to be thanked for his hard work and perseverance in preparing and praying over S.1558, the “Religious Liberties Restoration Act,” introduced on August 1 by Senator Wayne Allard.

S.1558 is not a constitutional amendment, but a legislative statute, which would remove from federal court review the displaying of the Ten Commandments, the national motto, and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Using this approach, a constitutional amendment would not be needed. Senator Allard’s bill would become law by a simple majority vote in both houses of Congress and the signature of the President. No liberal federal judge would have any authority to rule on this law. If passed, this bill would end situations such as that facing Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore.

Americans would be free to display the national motto, say the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, and display the Ten Commandments wherever the local community decides – even on government property!

S. 1558 would also end conflicting enforcement of U.S. law. For example a federal judge in Pennsylvania has ruled that displaying the Ten Commandments in a public building to be constitutional, while another federal judge in Alabama ruled such a display unconstitutional.

Senator Allard introduced S.1558, which was read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.  The bill is to restore religious freedoms.

Under section 2 Congress finds eight accomplishments for this bill. Following
are three of the eight:

1) The Declaration of Independence declares that governments are instituted to secure certain unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, with which all human beings are endowed by their Creator and to which they are entitled by the laws of nature and of nature’s God;

2) The organic laws of the United States Code and the Constitution of every State, using various expressions, recognize God as the source of the blessing of liberty;

3) The First Amendment to the Constitution secures right’s against laws respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof made by the federal courts to be included among the provisions of the 14th amendment

This is a critically needed bill. Sacrificial work and persistence have brought it thus far. Please pray that it will find favor in the hearts of all members of Congress. “The prayers of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5: 16

Two law suits have been filed in Georgia, in Barrow and Habersham County by the ACLU to remove the Ten Commandments from public buildings. The purpose of the law suits is to demolish every connection this nation has to Christianity
