| PRESIDENT
BUSH AND THE STATE OF THE UNION 2004
Thursday , January 22, 2004
How did you rate the President’s State of the Union speech
last night? If you were involved in the World Net Daily’s
poll you would have answered one of these
six questions:
1. I agree with most everything except his plan to legalize illegal
aliens.
2. He hit a home run.
3. He made his case well.
4. While good on the terror war, his domestic agenda disappoints
me.
5. I never had a doubt it would be good.
6. You’ve got to be kidding, the speech was horrible.
If you checked number 1, then we checked the same one, with concern
over immigration. In regard to immigration, the President said:
“Tonight, I also
ask you to reform our immigration laws, so they reflect our values
and benefit our economy.” Then continuing he said, “I
propose a new temporary worker program to match willing foreign
workers with willing employees when no American can be found to
fill the job…A temporary worker program will help protect
our homeland. Allowing border patrol and law enforcement to focus
on these threats to our national security.” “I
oppose amnesty,” he said, because it would encourage further
illegal immigration, and unfairly reward
those who break our laws.”
However, Bush’s political strategists are aware of the unpopularity
of his
immigration initiative because it is now clear in the opinion polls.
However,
they believe that the immigration proposal will gain support when
it is recast as an economic and homeland security issue. Don’t
be sure
As of last night though, the question with the majority of voters
was #1 that said, “I agree with most everything except his
plan to legalize illegal aliens. It received 1, 250 votes, compared
to 795 second, 745 third, and so on. But according to the Gallop’s
poll 55% of Americans disapprove of the proposal,
and that number is rising.
A good point Bush made was that he might support a Constitutional
provision to protect marriage if activist’s judges continue
to challenge the institution. He stated: “Activists judges
have begun to redefining marriage by court order, without regard
for the will of the people…if judges insist…the only
alternative left to the people would be the Constitutional process.
Bush plans to spend $300 million annually to promote healthy marriage.
The Defense of Marriage Act, signed in 1996 protects marriage under
federal law
as the union of a man and a woman.
This must be protected.
Speak up on these critical issues of our day. “If thou faint
in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.”
